Ayorek is a platform to record, connect, and enable the city and the people of Surabaya. Specifically, it aims to collect, organise, and disseminate the rich dynamics of urban experience and knowledge, that are particularly grounded in Surabaya, be they stories, actions, questions, ideas, know-how, challenges or solutions. We also develop directories of events, spaces and networks in Surabaya.
We are not looking for the latest headlines. With a website as our main platform, we aim to utilise and explore a variety of media: text, photo, illustration, audio (music), video, etc. Ultimately, the hope is to make the city Surabaya become more diverse, colorful and sustainable, through the dissemination, interaction, collaboration between individuals and communities Surabaya, and hopefully also encourages more diverse knowledge (re)creation of Surabaya.
What kind of stories are published in Ayorek?
Currently we are focusing on the following topics, although we do not limit future possibilities!
- city: life in the city, urban theories, transportation, infrastructure
- kampung, neighbourhood
- history
- inter-city: presenting stories from other cities
- culture: stories related to culture and media related to Surabaya. Yes, yes, we realise that culture shouldn’t be limited only to books, films, music and other high culture, but please bear with us while we develop better classification and write more stories :)
- work: business, life sustenance
- design: design processes, thinking, problem solving
- life: people, health, sex, and so on
You can contribute to Ayorek through various media: text, photo, illustration, audio or video. Read our submission guide here.

Our aims

- Bridge and facilitate dialogues between individuals and groups that were previously not connected
- Provide a platform where popular works and academic writings about Surabaya can intersect in various formats and media
Our team
Ayorek is motored by a loose, mobile network of individuals from different backgrounds—civil servants, office workers, nomadic designers and architects, musicians, lecturers, students, activists, the perpetual jobless, and whatnot. We work collaboratively, mostly on voluntary basis, to assemble, connect, and enable those who care, for individual and collective progress. Read more about our editorial team.
Currently, Ayorek Secretariat is hosted by the C2O library & collabtive, an independent collaborative library and learning lab. Ayorek was formally commenced in March 2012 in Surabaya as a part of the one-year-long Urban Knowledge Dynamics program initiated by the Rujak Center for Urban Studies, from which we received a grant (USD20,000 from March 2012to December 2013). Other than in Surabaya, the program has also been undertaken in two other cities: in Makassar as Makassar Nol Kilometer (managed by Tanah Indie) and in Semarang as UGD Semarang (managed by Hysteria).
